State Parks in Virginia

Anyone have any good parks you'd recommend in Va? I am starting back into camping. My oldest son is turning 4 and is really in the mood for some camping. I'd prefer to stay away from Rv's. I do not mind a hike in to a good campsite kinda far afield either.

We have stayed at Hungry Mother State Park.  It was beautiful.  We were right next to a small creek and saw a fawn walking down the middle of it.  The lake is VERY cold for swimming.  Overall it is a good, cool campground for the heat of the summer.

We have also stayed at Fairy Stone State Park.  There is a nice beach/swimming area at the lake.  There are also paddle boats and activites planned by the rangers.  We went on a fun night hike!  There is a place to also go hunting for fairy stones.

These are the only 2 parks that we stayed at but we greatly enjoyed both!

Gathright Dam, Peaks of Otter or Elkhorn Lake,

all very nice.

You can go to your local chamber of commerce or call them and they can send you or give you a directory on camping in Va. or any other state that you want to go. The directory usually breaks the book down in regions and will list campgrounds, give there address and phone numbers and will tell you a little about the campground. Have Fun!
