I’m looking to reduce the size of the stuff I take camping so I’m either cutting down or cutting out.  One thing I noticed is that I carry a lot of ropes.  They’re either nylon (2cm) or the yellow stuff (1-2cm).  I use them primarily to hold up the tarps.

I’m looking for smaller ropes to tie up my tarps.  I picked up some 400 lbs test rope (paracord like … I’d like to get the 550 lbs test paracord but I can’t seem to find it up here.)

What’s the best rope that I can use for this?  Is paracord rope too small?  It’s not any more than 5mm in diameter.

Thanks in advance,

M

It should be fine, tarps just need to be kept up tight so water cannot pool "that is if you are using it to make a canopy, which is what I am assuming". The water would be the only weight problem. Also, if you are backpacking and you want to cut down on rope, you could shorten the length and find a spot with trees closer together.Lastly, if you are going somewhere with high winds, or for whatever reason you are afraid that the rope does not have enough strength, try bring a small role of duct tape and taping the rope a little in the area where it goes through the tarp "assuming that you have decided to use some limited space for duct tape".
