My family and I just bought a TepuiTents rooftop tent and thought it was amazing. We took it up to Nobel Lake, CA on our 4x4 Toyota Rav4 into the backcountry up some of the areas trails and fire roads.

For those of you who haven’t been there it is about 4hrs South East of the SF Bay Area north of the Yosemite wilderness on highway 4.  You drive through Angels Camp and on up into the mountains.  Most of the roads east of there are narrow windy roads that are closed in the winter.  There are lots of great trails for the 4x4 with some rugged camp spots and breathtaking alpine lakes that you can only get to with a 4x4.  BRING EXTRA GAS.  We used the Tepui Tents Autana roof top tent and were very pleased with our experience.  Not only was it great to be able to cook and enjoy the views of the alpine lake from inside our vestibule but it provided us the needed protection from the mosquitoes that are pretty fierce right around sunset.  It took us about 90mins to get up the rugged 4x4 trail to the lake and then we setup camp and did some day hiking and swimming in the pristine Alpine Lake.  Camping up in the tent gave us great views of the surrounding wilderness and a bit, a small bit, of peace of mind because we were up away from the bears.  I haven’t heard of that many bear encounters in that area but I’d rather be up in my car roof tent then sleeping on the ground in the fetal position when a bear rolls through camp.

Anyway, if you are considering purchasing a roof top tent I would strongly recommend you take the leap.  Trust me you’ll never go back.  My personal experience with the Tepui Tents roof top tent has been nothing but positive.

Rooftop tents?  Can't leave my camp setup and go for supplies or to another trailhead in my 4-wheeler.  Can't choose among competing brands as there is so little demand/production.  Can't get in to many California campsites as vehicles are prohibited past the barriers.  A neat idea though and it sounds like your setup is working as planned.  They make good quality tents.   PS:  As a D7 district deer and bear hunter I can assure you that bears are good climbers!  Shocked

Then i'll just have to hope that no bears want to climb up and meet me.

I've never had problems getting the rig into camping grounds. Granted, we tend to go camping in places that allow cars. I do understand the concern about wanting to take your car to get supplies, ect. You would have to dismantle the tent (that does only take like 3 min.) or take two cars if you are traveling with more people.

Looking for a brand was an complicated experience due to the limited knowledge and use that there seems to be of rtts in the US. Ultimately, we went with Tepui Tents because they had a good product that fit our needs, they're a CA company and the owner is very accessible all over the web, which meant that we knew there would be help available if we needed any.

It's a quality Chinese-made tent, it simply would limit many users and keep them out of many campsites or force them to stay out on the dustier roadside parking slots, much the same as tents that attach to the back of SUVs or some hatchbacks.    My comments are not to bash, but only to note that a  ground-placed tent offers more flexibility, and there's little added safety in being up higher.  If money was no object, there are certainly dry-camping situations where I think this tent would be great, particularly for the scenic advantage of raised visibility.
